About the event
TECHNE BENEFIT! All proceeds from this concert go to support exciting new TECHNE initiatives in Chicago!
TECHNE is an organization founded in 2010 by Suzanne Thorpe and Bonnie Jones. TECHNE’s programs introduce young women and girls to technology-focused art making, musical improvisation, critical listening and community collaboration. As part of our objective to embed social justice activism into our work, TECHNE delivers our programming through partnerships with local, grassroots arts organizations that share an aligned commitment to racial and gender equity.
TECHNE creates environments that encourage identity exploration, critical thinking, experimentation, and creative expression. Our programs use project-based interaction, critical listening and social activism within community collaborations with a belief that these activities engender agency with technology, as well as opportunities for alternative conceptions and configurations of self in marginalized populations. For more information on our programs, and how you can support us, visit www.technesound.org.
TALSOUNDS Natalie Chami adopted the TALsounds moniker in 2009 for her solo explorations in the drone, ambient, and electro-acoustic improv disciplines. In live performance, Chami's analog synthesizers weave together into drifting loops that evolve in tandem with her vocal leads and choral harmonies. Her meditative sessions stretch into hypnotizing depths of stream-of-consciousness multi-instrumental input, sinking into expanses of infinite sustain and cresting into bursts of noise from an arsenal of oscillators and effects pedals. As a member of free music trio Good Willsmith, she has toured the country and released eight albums since 2012, including the LPs The Honeymoon Workbook (2014) and Things Our Bodies Used To Have (2016) on Mexico City-based label Umor Rex. Chami performs as half of ambient duo l'eternebre, and co-founded the experimental collective/netlabel Screaming Claws. She was born in Ontario and lives in Chicago.
"...the placid hypnosis Chami deals in is oddly metastatic - it’s both the skin and the core, spreading to every cell inside her songs. " - The Out Door

SUZANNE THORPE & BONNIE JONES Bonnie Jones - electronics Suzanne Thorpe - flute, electronics
Performing Confluence & Divergence III
Bonnie Jones is a Korean-American improvising musician, poet, and performer working with electronic sound and text. She performs solo and in numerous collaborative music, film, and visual art projects. Bonnie’s work explores the fluidity and function of electronic noise (field recordings, circuit bending) and text (poetry, found, spoken, visual). Her art seeks opportunities within different mediums to expose the fluid nature of individual identity, history, form, and meaning.
Born in 1977 in South Korea she was raised on a dairy farm in New Jersey, and currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland.
Suzanne Thorpe composes site-specific sound installations that use a variety of media and technology, and performs on the electroacoustic flute, expanded with digital and analog tools. She is also a Deep Listening instructor, having studied in depth with American Composer and Deep Listening Founder Pauline Oliveros. Thorpe draws upon traditions of acoustic ecology, soundscape, land art, and improvisation, as well as research in phenomenology, ecological cognition and critical theory. With sound, she works in conjunction with environments, and their behavior. By situating herself as a collaborator with an environment, and its inhabitants, Thorpe’s work becomes the result of an enjoining with place and community, yielding compositions and performances that render evolving sonic expressions of dynamic interaction.
