About the event
Featuring performances by: Tortoise Helen Gillet / Kim Alpert TALsounds Jeff Parker / Ben LaMar Gay / Tomeka Reid
Experimental Sound Studio (ESS) celebrates another year of incubating, presenting, and documenting innovative work in the sonic arts with our biggest gala yet at Constellation Chicago on Saturday, July 22, 2017.
Founded in 1986, ESS is a non-profit, artist-run organization focused on sound in all its exploratory cultural manifestations. Each year ESS incubates, facilitates, presents, documents, and archives work by some of today’s most innovative artists—in 2016 alone we worked with over 300 artists, presenting nearly 100 programs. Proceeds from the Gala go directly back into these endeavors, providing tangible support for artists and contributing to a stable environment for radical experimentation.
This year’s gala features an all-star line-up of performances. Headlining the evening is the undefinable, highly influential experimental band Tortoise in two sets. Joining them is singer, composer and improviser Helen Gillet with Kim Alpert; electronic improvisations from TALsounds; and a trio especially formed for this occasion with Jeff Parker, Ben LaMar Gay, and Tomeka Reid. Food will be provided by the equally innovative Sauce and Bread Kitchen.
General Admission: $50 online / $65 at the door VIP: $100 VIP ticket holders get front row seating; a signed limited-edition artist t-shirt by Damon Locks, a custom ESS glass; an ESS totebag, and more.
